Broken you resolutions yet? Two tips to keep you on track!

Hi, how are you all?

As we enter the fourth week into the New Year, how are we all doing with our New Year resolutions? It’s said that it is around this time of the year that most people forget all about their New Year’s resolutions, it’s the time when most people break their resolutions, and they crack and revert back to whatever it was they were doing previously.

There are many strategies when it comes to training and diet, a strategy is what is needed if you really want to make a change but often following through on that strategy is sometimes hard to do. Our emotions take control and we revert to behavior that doesn’t support our goals and desires.

We always do things for a reason, and sometimes it’s to change our state, meaning how we feel.  Food, cigarettes, exercise or alcohol all change our state. These are only vehicles, either good or bad depending on your values.

So if for instance we are using certain foods to make ourselves feel good in the moment, but ultimately these foods will make us gain weight in the long run, it’s quite possible it isn’t the food we want, but a change of state in that particular moment, we want to feel good and to put ourselves into a pleasurable state.

There are a couple of ways we can change our states immediately,

  1. The way we use our physiology
  2. What we decide to focus on

If you are about to make a decision which does not fit with your goal, check how you are breathing, your posture, the way you are moving.  Begin to breathe more deeply and with a rhythm, studies have shown this will center and focus your mind. Stand up straight, and move with purpose, change the intensity of  how you speak, to yourself even.

Change your focus, we get more of what we focus on. So instead of focusing on how tired you are, or how stressful the days has been, focus on your goal, focus on the regret you will feel if in three months you haven’t achieved your goal but worse, you are even further away from it!

Use these tools to take control of your own emotions and do not let your emotions take control of you. As Deepak Chopra say’s “Every time you are tempted to react in the same old way, ask yourself if you want to  be a prisoner of the past or a pioneer of the future”
